After more than an hour of preparation, Bellatrix was very nearly presentable. A wasted hour that she could have better spent doing virtually anything else. But that was what a visit from her sister meant: it meant heavy, elaborate dresses that seemed to squeeze tighter the harder she fought for breath, and facial creams and powders to smooth away the slightest imperfection. It meant forcing herself fully back into the role of a perfect lady, a role that felt more constricting and limiting with every day. For Bellatrix – she who struck fear into the hearts of her enemies, she who set the night aflame with the force of her passion – to be forced to once again be nothing more than someone’s wife, someone’s daughter, was almost too much to bear.

But that was what family meant.

She sat before her mirror, ready to finish off her outfit with a pair of goblin-made diamond earrings that Narcissa had always wanted so desperately. As she strung the first one through her ear, noticing the unpleasant weight of the jewelry, she spoke.

“You must not allow Lucius into your study,” she said, turning towards him. “It hasn’t been dusted, and you know he’ll notice the mess.”

"He can complain all he wants." Rodolphus growled. He was in a terrible mood, though he did not share with his wife as to why. Entertaining guests in his own home set Rod off. He hated it and, as a result, he currently hated everything. Nevertheless when the guests arrived he was nothing less than a gracious pureblood host, all smiles and conversation.
