“It has been brought to my attention that a number of
you  have  questions that  you would like for  me  to
answer.  Please, feel free to ask whatever you  would
like of  me,  and I shall do my best  to  respond  as
accurately as possible.”

DATA!!!! I' have some very important questions for you!

What percent of your free time would you say you spend secretly harassing the crew as Sherlock Holmes? If the answer is zero, what DO you do in your free time?

What is your opinion on contractions? How do double contractions float your boat? Triple contractions? Perhaps you think they shouldn't've made an appearance in the English language. Maybe they'dn't've if you were around when people started speaking English.

ALSO, do you carry anything in your pockets (I keep my hands in mine)?

“I had not anticipated receiving so many questions simultaneously. I shall
endeavor to present my answers in a way that is easily accessible. Please,
stop  me  if I am going too fast or am otherwise  failing  to  communicate
effectively.”

“I  do  not  believe that I am guilty of harassing any amongst  the  crew,
whether  I  am in costume or not. My programming  prohibits  intentionally
malicious acts against other  sentient beings.  Your question does trouble
me, as I had not previously  considered  the fact that others might object
to  my  activities  in  the  holodeck.   Indeed,   my  friends  have  been
tremendously supportive of my appreciation for Sherlock Holmes.  This does
not, however, mean that there are not consequences of my actions.  I shall
have  to  investigate  this matter thoroughly,  to ensure that  I  am  not
troubling anyone.”

“To  answer the second half of your question, I devote the majority of  my
leisure time to my study of humanity. I make a concerted effort to improve
my understanding by spending as much  time as possible with my fellow crew
mates. I am a member of a string quartet,  I participate in group painting
sessions,  and  I  devote a significant amount of time to  my  friends.  I
believe that socialization is highly beneficial for me.  Oftentimes I have
learned important things about social dynamics or the human condition, and
have been able to alter my programming accordingly.”

“When  I  am  alone,  I further my study of  culture and  science  through
reading,  research,  and my own attempts to nurture my creativity.  I have
difficulty  still  progressing beyond mere imitation, but my  friends  and
colleagues assert that I am improving.”

“I  find contractions puzzling. Because I cannot easily determine  whether
this more informal use of language is appropriate, I have not attempted to
alter  the aspects of my programming that,  by default, omit  contractions
from my speech.”

“I   do  not  believe  that  contractions ,  and,  by  extension,   slang,
colloquialisms,  or  expletives  represent  a corruption of  language.  By
contrast,  I believe that the most valid form of language is that which is
used by the people.”

“To  answer  your final question,  my Starfleet uniform does  not  contain
pockets,  so  that is not a question that I have to consider in  my  daily
life.”

Sorry Data! I didn't mean to overwhelm you with a barrage of questions. I'll give you just two this time.

What do you think you would be doing if working as a Starfleet Officer were not an option?

If you were able to spend one week in the 21st century, how would you spend it?

I did not mean to imply that I had in any way found the questions
unwelcome – quite the contrary, in fact. I appreciate greatly that
you  have  found me interesting  enough to merit  such  questions.
Rather,        I meant that I potentially could have difficulty in
explaining my answers in a way that is both easy to understand and
thorough enough to explain my meaning.”

Ask Data Starin11

You pose interesting questions. I enjoy having the opportunity to
answer them.”

It  is difficult to imagine what my life would be like if I  were
not a part of Starfleet. Of course, there was the possibility that
I would not be admitted to Starfleet,        given my status as an
artificial life form,       but I am fortunate enough to have been
granted admission to the Academy.       Starfleet has been such an
integral  part  of  my  existence that I believe  I  would  be  an
entirely different being without it.      However,     when I have
considered the idea of resigning my commission,   as I have had to
on several occasions, the idea of studying the history of humanity
has greatly appealed to me.      I believe that I would be able to
learn much from my research, and that the Federation would benefit
from my work.”

The answer to your second question very much depends on what part
of the 21st century you mean.  If you mean the early 21st century,
the altogether more peaceful part of that era,    I believe that I
would spend my time visiting some  of the lost museums and wonders
of the world.  There is a truly devastating amount of history that
has been lost throughout the course of humanity's development as a
species. If I were to visit later in the century, after the planet
had descended into global war,     I believe that I would spend my
time either as a medic for a platoon of soldiers,   or else living
amongst a community of civilians living in a war zone.   I believe
that  both situations would offer  me a unique perspective on  the
state of humanity at the time.”

Very fascinating, Data! Would you be able to explain your obsession with humans? Is there something specific about them that piques your interest more than say, Romulans?

Can we talk about morals? Surely you have seen and done a lot with Starfleet. Do you believe that your experiences over the years have changed the way you view things? Like, perhaps something that your creator would have deemed right, would be wrong in your eyes.

With all the different races that you have come across, and each of them with their own sense of morality, do you ever question your own morals? Who is to say that humans have everything right?

Let's look at the Borg for a little bit. As far as they knew, they were just doing what they thought was right. Did we fight with them simply because their morals interfered with our own? How can we be sure that we would affect the universe more positively than the Borg?

I'm curious as to what you think, and would very much value your perspective on things.

Thanks, Data!
