pomp & circumstance || fabian & molly

Post by thegirlnamedcrow on Thu Feb 12, 2015 1:01 pm

–– “So, Molls! Your gran says you’ve finished school! You’re all grown up now – feels like just yesterday my sister brought little Percy home, and now here’s his daughter, all grown up.”

–– “hope it’s okay that I’ve called you Molls – that’s what I always call my sister. Force of habit, really. Let me know if it bothers you and I’ll lay off.”

“No —- yes… I mean, yes - I mean, thank you. Um….”, she shifted a little awkwardly in her position and looked at her feet, “Yeah, it’s okay. You can call me that”

”It’s a relief, being out of school at last”

Fabian beamed at his niece. “Great! Molls it is. For your part, feel free to call me whatever you'd like. Uncle Fabian, Fabby-Fabs, the Prew – hell, you can call me ‘that daft stinky broomhead’ if you'd like, so long as you wait until I'm out of earshot. Wouldn't want to wound an old man's pride, would you?”

“I can understand that one. Merlin, you wouldn't believe how keen I was to get out – not nearly as keen as my teachers were to get rid of me, of course, but still pretty damn eager. ’Course, as soon as I'd made it out, I hadn't the faintest idea of what to do with myself, but I'm sure you've got a better head on your shoulders than I did.”

Momentarily flabbergasted by her great-uncle's swift and enthusuastic response, the girl was stunned into silence. She had not expected her words to be met with so much energy, so much excitement. It was almost like he was eager to talk to her, despite the mundane topic, which was something she still had trouble wrapping her mind around. Then again, she knew that Fabian was simply a positive person in general, so maybe she shouldn't be reading too much into his behaviour.
"I... I don't think you're daft. Or stinky", she said, "I mean, you're a little bit stinky, but that's normal. It's been a long day, I'm probably a bit stinky too"

"School is... it is... I understand that it is necessary, but... it can be... I mean...", she shook her head, "I want to do bigger things now"

Fabian frowned at Molly's words. “No, I'm afraid I'm definitely a bit daft. Not much that can be done about that on. But I do at least try to keep myself clean. I mean, I took a shower after Quidditch earlier – do I really smell that bad?”

He couldn't believe that he was even asking the question. Was it not he, after all, who had for years claimed that a Prewett never stank; a Prewett smelled at all times like triumph and raw sex appeal.

At least, that had been his stance until his boys had reached puberty. It turned out that, sometimes, a Prewett simply stank. Well, a Bones-Prewett did. The jury was still out about regular Prewetts.

But enough of that. Better to steer the conversation in a more pleasant direction. “Oh, school is definitely necessary,” he said, laughing. “That doesn't mean it's particularly fun. And now that you're out, you've got the freedom to do so many things! The world is your oyster, Miss Weasley – I trust you'll take full advantage of all the opportunities ahead of you.”

The girl was made to feel a new kind of uncertainty as she observed the sudden change in his demeanour. Her uncle had went from being just happy and smiling and glad to share his thoughts, to something that seemed to her like he was suddenly made insecure, frowning, and more cautious. This change was her fault, most likely, though still, Molly had no idea what she might have done to cause it. Was it because she said he was stinky?
"I don't agree. You're not stupid, or crazy, or anything like that, I don't think", she said, her voice only a little smaller than it had been before, "And um... you're medium stinky. It's not really bad. It's normal. I mean... you"
Blushing, she looked down, and for a whole moment, she said nothing, trying to gather her thoughts instead.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings"

       "Um... yeah"
She bit her lip, still not having gathered the courage to look up from the ground again. Embarrassment was still rushing through her bloodstream, leaving her unable to think clearly or completely understand what exactly the conversation was supposed to be going to, but at the same time, she tried to be aware of her habits, and not stand around in silence for too long at a time. This was something that was difficult for, as she prefered to have her words planned out before she spoke. Still, as she had already suffered a mishap, she needed to try to avoid long and awkward pauses.
"I'm trying to apply for the entrance test for the police academy"

Merlin, this girl really was like her father. Absolutely no sense of humour, just like good ol’ Perce.

How the hell was he supposed to talk to someone with no sense of humour? At least half of what he said was exclusively for comedic effect. What did he have left to say if jokes were taken out of the picture? Observations about the weather and awkward silences, that was what.

Well. He would figure something out. He had never been one to back down from a challenge.

Molly may not have had much of a sense of humour, but Fabian couldn't help but find her protestations and embarrassment both amusing and endearing. The girl may have been terribly serious for someone so young, but she was incredibly sweet.

With a soft chuckle, Fabian said, “Only medium stinky, eh? I suppose I'll have to live with that. Also – ” He fixed her with his warmest smile. “ – Don't feel that you've got to worry about offending me, or that you've got to talk me out of a self-esteem problem. I was just kidding about the daftness – sure, I can be daft as a brush, but you don't get to be the head of Games and Sports with nothing but brooms for brains. So really, I can assure you, I've a healthy and resilient ego. A bit too healthy, if you ask my wife, sister, brother, best mates, coworkers, Hogwarts professors, distant acquaintances, or any of my six children, but pah. What do they know?” Damn it; he was joking again. Whatever, the girl would just have to sodding deal with it.

At her next words, Fabian's smile brightened further. “Police Academy, eh? Police – they're like Muggle Aurors, aren't they?” He did not wait for an answer; he was pretty sure he'd got that right. “Merlin, but that's brilliant, Molls! I wouldn't have expected that from you, I'll admit, but I can see how it's rather fitting for a young lady such as yourself. Sure, it's hard work, policing, but you look fit enough for the task. The Muggles would be lucky to have you.”

"What is important is that you are not stinky in your heart.", she said, the tone of her voice as heartfelt and serious as ever, "It is what matters." Her expression was a picture of utmost sincerity, her skin not even cracking as she spoke the words. Her eyes seemed bigger that moment, wide open and staring up at her uncle like he had just made some grand revelation to her, quietly tucking a strand of her hair behind her ears.
It was odd for her to contemplate his words once he put them into context. On the one hand, there was of course the familiar rush of embarrassment over not being able to understand the joking meaning they had entailed. Still, this was one she was quite used to by now and could easily suppress if she wanted to. The one aspect of what he said that gave her trouble, however, was the way he looked at her, the way his eyes sparkled as he took just the right amount of amusement into his mouth.
Although everyone kept telling her that she was a woman now, at that moment she felt but a little girl.
"Just because you say you are not easily offended, doesn't mean that you will never be. I, um.... uh, thank you for telling me, but I'd rather be safe", she said, "I always do things that make people upset, even when I don't mean it. Just because you're not offended by things I do, doesn't mean it wasn't offensive. I need to try to, uh... police myself and still be honest"

A blush came over her at his next words, and she quickly looked away again. As accustomed as she's been told she ought to have been to people talking about her, positive comments still never failed to take her by surprise.
"It's... somewhat like the Aurors. They serve the same function in principle, keeping order and dealing with criminals, but they're less... um... big, less esteemed, less... less glorious", she said, still avoiding his eyes, "I believe it's worth it. Thank you for believing in me, too"
