          “Ahhh. That’s the stuff. I – ”

“Oh! Molly, love. I didn’t see you there.”

“ … Let’s not go telling Mia about this.
You understand – it’ll only worry her.”

“wouldn’t call it keeping secrets, exactly.
More  sparing my  wife  details I  know will  only
upset her.  Poor dear has more than enough on
her plate without worrying about silly old me.”

“And it’s not like that –  I swear on Ellie’s
tai l it’s  not.   I  watched  my  granddad  smoke
his  lungs into oblivion –  you  think I’d want  to
stop  myself being able  to play Quidditch?  But
when you’ve six children –  six beautiful,  lovely
children   –    you    sometimes   need    a   little
something  extra  to  handle  them, as beautiful
and lovely as they are. Especially Phoebe.”

“Well, perhaps it’s a tiny lie, but these things happen
in marriage,  you have to understand.  I’m sure there
are plenty of things Mia spares me,  and I’m grateful
for it   –   marriage means focussing on the positives
and letting the small things slide.”

Oh, I do plenty of that as well. I don’t mean to brag,
but   there’s   hardly   a   middle-aged   man   in   the
wizarding  world as well turned-out as me.  Head  of
Magical Games and Sports,  you know –  staying fit
is part of the job description.  But when you’ve need
for  something  quick to  take  the edge  off,  there’s
nothing quite like a cigarette to get you there.”

     “Am I a terrible influence?”

”There’s no such a thing as a small lie”
With any other person, this line might have been
delivered as a joke, or an exaggeration, or at least
a hint of irony - but not so with Molly. Molly meant
serious business.
”No matter what you lie about, you betray
the principles of trust and honesty. And if
marriage means lying to eachother, then I
don’t want to be married”
”There are other ways, still, but that’s beside
the point.  I’m not going to tell you to stop
smoking, but if you do you should own up to it”
   ”Yes. Right now, you are”

Re: guilty pleasures || fabian & molly

Fabian was, for a moment, overwhelmed with the memory of his nephew Percy crossing his arms and stamping his feet over something or other he objected to in his uncle’s behaviour. Well, it seemed Molly was very much her father’s daughter.

How that sort of rigid adherence to the established rules had popped up in a good, respectable Gryffindor family, Fabian really had no idea. He would have to have a little chat with his sister about that – somehow, he thought, this had to be her fault.

“My wife knows I’ll still sneak a cigarette from time to time – she may not be particularly happy about it, but as long as it’s just a once in a while thing, she can’t bring herself to be particularly fussed about it either. But I know she’d prefer me to keep it out of sight, out of mind. As I said, she’s plenty enough on her mind without worrying about her silly husband.”

He sighed. “Idon’t want to put you off the idea of marriage – the years I’ve spent with Amelia have been the happiest of my life, especially since all our little ones were born.”

He sometimes forgot that these ‘little ones’ weren’t quite so little anymore. Maybe it was denial, but even as they conquered the wizarding world in their own ways, they were still his children, still young and perfect in his eyes.

“But while a marriage built on lies will never be a truly happy one, one where you share absolutely everything can be unpleasant in its own way. We know and accept that our partners do things we’d rather they didn’t – that’s part of what it means to be married. It means accepting that you’ve shackled yourself to someone who is, at the end of the day, imperfect. Granted, Amelia’s a damn sight better turned-out than an old lump like me, but the point remains. You turn a blind eye to the things you don’t approve of, at times, because at the end of the day none of that matters. When it comes down to it, the fact that I’ll have a smoke now and again doesn’t change the fact that Mia is absolutely over the moon about me. And as long as I don’t come home reeking of cigarettes, and as long as she doesn’t have to see me doing it? Well, she’s specifically told me that I’m entitled to my vices.”

At her last point, he grinned. “Ah, yes. But those things require effort, and take up energy. And when you’ve just spent the past two hours chasing your beloved daughter around the house, trying to convince her that just because she’s of age now doesn’t mean she’s allowed to go around cursing the furniture and changing her sister’s hair colour when she’s not looking, well. You don’t have much energy to spare.”

Suddenly feeling a bit defensive, he added, “Really. Try raising Phoebe while remaining a pillar of virtue. I promise, it’s not going to work. Even Mia loses her temper once and a while with that little fiend.”

Molly knew that her great uncle Fabian was a good person, and that he was kind and that he liked to do what was right. Much like Phoebe, however, he appeared to have struggle remembering that even the small things could make a lot of difference, that words and actions had meaning, that everything mattered.
It was a discouraging, but it was what she was there for - to push people back into the right direction. With Phoebe it usually didn’t take much more than a few words for her to see the error of her ways and promise to do better in the future.
Her uncle Fabian was nice, too , and he would probably have a similar attitude. She could see that he was feeling guilty about trying to lie, already. A good sign. It would push him to correct his behaviour.
Yet, when he spoke again, anything she might have wanted to say dissolved into nothing, and her tongue turned numb, leaving her with nothing but confusion. The girl was looking at him intently, and listening to his words, but no matter what, none of what he said would make any sense to her.
Had she misjudged him? Had she said something wrong? Or was she simply too stupid for all of this?
Molly took a step back and crossed her arms, trying to sort herself out and make reason out of the situation. Yet, she was torn in her efforts - she could not sort out her thoughts while listening to him, and she could not properly form her thoughts without listening to his side, and taking in ever.
And so she chose the latter.
When he was done, it took her some time to get a hold of herself again, and some part of her worried, at this point, that she might look silly just staring at her uncle like that for what must have been minutes, but it was natural to her.
In the end, she didn’t even that much to say.
”But when she knows and told you not to make her see it, then why didn’t you mention that earlier? I get that”
   She frowned.
”And I… I don’t understand. What is wrong with Phoebe? I like her”

For a long moment, Fabian stood awkwardly, waiting for his grand-niece to speak. When she finally did, he felt even more unsettled than he had before. There was something so… So absolute about this girl. He couldn’t help but feel that, if he said the wrong thing at the wrong moment, he would have condemned himself in her eyes forever.

Molly was a strange girl, and no doubt about it. Still, he couldn’t help but admire her strong morality. She was, perhaps, a bit misguided, but her heart seemed to be in the right place.

“I'd thought you'd have realized,” he said, still a bit nonplussed. “I've been married for Merlin knows how many years, Molly. I have six children with Mia; we've built a life together. Do you reallythink I can keep secrets from her? Or that I’d really want to keep a secret from the love of my life?”

He almost frowned at her words about Phoebe. Of course, he adored his daughter beyond description, as any proud father would, but he was the first to admit that she had a bit of trouble when it came to behaviour. How was it that Fabian, a celebrated war hero, had fallen under fire, while Phoebe, a veritable whirlwind of lies and deception, had apparently passed unscathed?

“Oh, believe me – I do too. She’s my equal favourite child with Gus, Gabe, Lainey, Hermie, and Mart. She’s one hell of a girl, my Phoebe is. But she can be…”

It took him a moment to find a polite way to describe his youngest daughter. After all, he couldn’t be sure that what he was saying wouldn’t get back to Phoebe, and if she found he’d been saying anything at all unflattering about her, there would be absolute hell to pay.

“She’s very high-spirited, you might say,” he finally said, settling on the excuse he always tried to give his wife when attempting to get Phoebe out of trouble. “And while that can be a very good trait in a person, for someone with her personality, that can sometimes cause problems.”

Molly knew that at this point, she was supposed to feel little else than relief that she had been wrong about her uncle, and that there was nothing to worry about, after all. She had always been inclined to like him, even if they didn’t interact much, and though he could give her doubts, at times, it was a good thing to know that there was no corruption in his heart, and that he knew what it meant to get on the right track.
Yet, none of that succeeded in breaking through to her.
It was not that she was upset over being in the wrong, or that she would rather have been right, so the task of ‘fixing him up’ could have fallen on her, or something petty like that. No, the girl had never had such urge toward self-importance.
Rather, her discomfort came from a place of shame and embarrassment oer her false assessment. She should have known better, or so she told herself, than to accuse him of anything without truly knowing what was going on. Or maybe, she should have listened more closely, understood his words a little better, before he aid anything.
In either case, she was mighty stupid.
Yet, she did not feel any urge to apologize or to take her words back. However false or uncalled for they might have been, they had been words of caution still, and they had to keep standing for this sake alone. It was never a bad time to remind someone to keep themselves in check.

”I wasn’t sure”, she said, “I don’t know you very well and there are a lot of people who would have no qualms about it. I’m glad you’re not one of them”
Molly uncrossed her arms again, only to proceed and bury her hands in her pockets. The smoke if his cigarette was slowly warming the room, filling the air with a heavy weight that threatened to let her eyelids fall shit, and make her lose her focus.
Molly didn’t know what it was about her and cigarette smoke, but every time she was exposed to it, it would always fill her mind with an unusual drowsiness and a sudden desire to take a long nap. If she was a smoker, she thought, she would never get anything done.
Yet, even in this state, her eyes never left him, and her focus remained sharp and piercing, as though it was a loaded rifle, aiming at a target. The girl never had any half-hearted conversations. Her attention always remained strong, and glued at the person she was engaged with.
”She’s lively, yes, and sometimes, she struggles with seeing the difference between having fun, and engaging trouble”, she said, “But she doesn’t want to hut anyone on purpose. Phoebe is kind and honest”
