After her spat with Hermia, Phoebe had retreated to the Gryffindor table and had made a great show of having a positively fantastic time, just in case her sister was still watching. Towards the end of the feast, though, her energies had begun to wane, and once again she could feel hot tears stinging at the corner of her eyes.
With a cheerful excuse about needing to pop off to the loo, Phoebe exited the great hall, not really caring where she was going so long as she could be alone. As soon as she was a hall or two off, she collapsed against the wall, dropping her head into her hands and allowing the tears to flow freely.
Damn Hermia for making her feel like this. Damn her for still managing to affect her so strongly, even after Phoebe had formally cut her ties.
Well. At least she was alone.
For the time being, anyway. After a few moments, she heard the sound of approaching footsteps. She peeked up to confirm the identity of the intruder, but really, Phoebe knew who it would be.
“Piss off, Gus,” she said, wiping her nose on the sleeve of her robe. “I'm not talking about it.”

Augustus had been watching the twins since the sorting, just as he had watched Elena, just as he had watched Gabe before her, and just as he would watch Martin when (or if) he came to Hogwarts. This place, Hogwarts, was safe. That is what they all said. Hogwarts was safe. They took it all back now but Gus had never believed it was safe. It was a battlefield, now in more senses than when he had been a first year. It was important that they stuck together as a family. He supposed that he was too optimistic. There had always been a sort of gap between Phoebe and Hermia. Gus just wished they had picked a better time to fall apart.
Augustus followed his sister down the hallways, book tucked back into his pocket, Ravenclaw robes fit and flowing. Without a word a plopped down next to his crying sister. Phoebe first. Hermia later. Elena would take care of Hermia first then Phoebe later. It was a silent strategy. It had only taken him once to see her at the Hufflepuff table and know she had been listening to the twins conversation as well.

Phoebe was always thrilled to have secured her favourite sibling's attention ( and had been known to go to some pretty impressive lengths to secure it), for once in her life, she wanted nothing more than for Gus to leave her be.
“I thought I told you to pi – to pi – ” Unable to hold back any longer, Phoebe burst into violent sobs. “Pi – piss off, Gus.”

Augustus loved his siblings but Phoebe...well, Phoebe was something special.
He did not have favorites.
He could not have favorites but if he did it would be Phoebe.
There was a connection with her he did not have with the others.
It was something he had trouble explaining, even to himself.

"No." The refusal was sweet and simple.

Phoebe did not speak again. To those who knew her, this was rather remarkable – Phoebe had something to say about absolutely everything, and she was quick and vocal in expressing her opinions. More remarkable still was the fact that she wasn't putting up a fight at her brother's refusal. Phoebe not getting her way generally resulted in yelling, disobedience, and full-out temper tantrums.
This was one of the few situations in which Phoebe quickly realised that her brother knew what was best for her.
Instead of pushing him away, Phoebe snuggled closer to Gus, threw an arm around his neck, and buried her head in his chest. She felt safe there; able to let her tears flow without worrying about what people were thinking about her.
She never had to worry about what Gus thought about her. She knew that he would always be there for her, no matter what.
