“She's asked me to give you the ‘talk’, to ensure that, at the very least, you'll not end up bringing a new Bones-Prewett into the world before your time. She says she's sure Dad did a ‘thoroughly rotten job’ explaining everything to you and that she trusts me to get it right. But unless you say otherwise, I'm not sure you'll be needing me to explain everything to you.”

Elena bit back her laughter, but allowed a faint smile to pull up the corners of her mouth. Her brother could be so adorably young at times.
“I start healer training next week, Martin, and was accepted to the program because of my thorough understanding of human biology. I think you'll find that I do and can, little one, though if you'd prefer I will spare you the horrors of a sex talk from your eldest sister.”

Elena was not, as a general rule, a particularly humorous person. Still, there was something about her youngest brother that lured out her more playful nature.
“Ah, but that's where you're wrong. Didn't you see the letter that came Monday? For my first rotation, I've been assigned to work with patients suffering from problems with their sexual health.
She hadn't been. Starting Monday, she'd be shadowing Healer Kenson, who presided over the ward for traumatic magical injuries. Still, squeamish though Martin was, she didn't think that would have quite the same effect on him as the image of his eldest sister poking around at strangers' bits.
“Part of my job will be educating the people who come through our ward. So you see, having the opportunity to practise with you will be exceptionally beneficial to me in the coming weeks.”

Would anyone really blame him if he was to stick his fingers in his ears right now, and run away? Merlin on a dung farm, that was his sister they were talking about. More than that, it was Elena - sweet, innocent Elena who gave him advice with his schoolwork and cared for everyone who was with her.
It would terrify him to think of her as anything, but a soft and virginal flower.
"Who did that?", he almost shrieked, "That is... not okay for you. Merlin, I thought you... Oh man"

This was proving too good to give up, at least right now. And besides, perhaps if she horrified Martin enough now, he'd be malleable enough for her to guide him to the confession she wanted.
Failing that, this was proving to be incredibly amusing.
“Don't you want to support your big sister?” Elena asked, her expression shifting to appear almost hurt. “You know how important healing is to me, Martin –– who am I to talk to about my work if you won't listen? The others are far too busy with their coursework to have time for little old me.”

And like, I mean... um... any people who go to a healer because of... anything like that... um, they probably already know stuff, too, so you're probably not even going to need it, you know?"

“You'd be surprised,” Elena said. “Not everyone has a parent as horrifyingly thorough as Dad evidently was. There are far more witches and wizards out there wandering around with a substandard sexual education than either of us would like to believe. I'll admit, Phoebe and I were a bit worried about the state of your knowledge base – as you'd probably worked out, Mum handled that for me and the twins, and we figured Dad would either be too embarrassed to name any bits by name, or else he'd approach the topic with a little bit too much enthusiasm. I'm glad, at least, that he seems to have taught the basics.”
“Tell me, just how horrifying thorough was he? Gabriel says Dad tried to give him a play-by-play account of his conception, poor dear. I do hope he'd learned a bit of tact by the time it was your turn for the talk.”

Elena was nice, and kind, and she always meant well. Martin himself had only just become desperate enough to resort to the means of blunt honesty.

Elena laughed, reaching forwards to ruffle her brother's hair. Sensitive though the boy was, she knew that he could tell the difference between her derision and her fondness. Or, at the very least, he knew better than to expect derisive laughter from her.
“Martin. Love.” She dropped her hand onto his shoulder and squeezed encouragingly. “You're so very young sometimes. One day, I very much hope that you'll realise that there really is nothing to be embarrassed about, as far as bits are concerned. Everybody makes a terribly big fuss about the whole thing, but in the end, what are bits but an important part of our anatomy? What is sex but an expression of a natural drive? Anything beyond that is nobody's business but yours and your partner's. And by the way – ” Here she cast him her most encouraging smile. “ – I don't think things'll go particularly smoothly with any partner if you can't even talk about these things in a relaxed, safe environment. Even with Dad's teachings under your belt.”

His cheeks reddened at his sister's touch, his face crumpled up in hot embarrassment as she ruffled his hair like a child, his hands already working to put his hair back into place as soon as he couldn't feel her fingers anymore. Still, he didn't back away from her.
"Um...", he stammered, more to help himself take in her words, than to start giving her an answer. As for the moment, her words and her demeanour were mostly confusing to him, and he found that he needed a moment or two just to process it all. It is only then that he finally has mind enough to produce a proper reply.
"I mean... you know, it's not like I'm particularly excited to, like, come out and start having sex with everyone, so it's not like you or Phoebe or anyone has to worry about that", he said awkwardly, "I mean, I kind of have trouble finding friends - what makes you think I'll suddenly start piling up b--- p---- g--- um... sex people?"

Elena resisted the impulse to laugh again, not wanting to deepen her brother's discomfort further. She did maintain the brightness of her smile, hoping to emphasize the fact that this was meant to be a casual, friendly conversation between a pair of close siblings.
“I'll be sure to set Phoebe's heart at rest. I'm sure she'll be incredibly disappointed that I don't have better gossip to report.”
Fixing Martin with a meaningful look, she added, “Not that I would ever tell her anything you'd told me in confidence, love. I wouldn't betray your trust like that. I promise – you can tell me anything, and I will take your secrets to the grave.”

Something about Elena's words, about the specific tone in her voice gave him pause.
In his young life, the boy had quickly learned that if there was anyone he could fall back to, anyone he could trust, it were his siblings. Even Phoebe, terrifying, devious, and unpredictable she may be, still had his general well-being in mind, and would harm him in a serious way... physically. And Elena, most especially, had validated this belief in him countless of times, and Martin himself, though he knew that he should not play favourites, but still, outside the question of love - for he believed he loved all his siblings equally - he trusted Elena the most. And he believed every word she just said to him.
"Well, I mean, um, it's not like everything we talk about is, like, gossip for Phoebe", he laughed, somewhat nervously, "Right?"
For the whole discussion, there had been something in the back of his mind, begging to left out, making him feel guilty and uncomfortable for not telling her. He had been planning to tell Elena, at least, and he had put it off for several weeks. Now, she was practically putting the opportunity on a silver platter for him to take.
"I mean... Yeah. Of course, I know", he said, "I'm... it's just that, um... I'm... I'm... I, um... I'm really glad to have you, Elena"

When Martin spoke again, Elena focussed her attention even more intently upon him. Ah, but they were finally getting somewhere now. She had begun to fear that her attempts to lead the conversation had been too subtle, that she would have to directly ask to get him talking. Thankfully, though, he seemed to have taken the bait.
“And I you, little one,” she said, reaching over to kiss the top of his head. “You are precious to me, Martin. And I want you to know that nothing will ever change that fact.”
When Martin spoke again, Elena focussed her attention even more intently upon him. Ah, but they were finally getting somewhere now. He was rambling, and he knew it just all too well. He was desperate, by now - anything to keep his mind occupied from the life-shattering prospect that it was entertaining at that very moment. His voice was shrill, becoming higher in pitch, faster in speed with every moment that he spoke, until
Martin would have stayed like that for a long while, regardless of whatever else his sister might have said, if it hadn't been for a single gesture, a single touch, that triggered so much in him - a kiss upon the very top of his head, soft, and soothing, and gentle, and exactly what he needed at the moment. With the smallest touch, a wall of emotion was released inside of him. His hands, his knees, his entire body began to shake in its wake.
Soon enough, the boys eyes began to water, his face burning with red as he looked up to his sister. In that moment, he wanted to leap into her arms, wanted to shout out, and tell her everything - but when he opened his mouth, all that followed was more crying.

Elena waited patiently as Martin babbled on, smiling encouragingly but otherwise not responding. Martin tended to let his mouth run on wen he was feeling overwhelmed. What he was saying was not important; it was simply important that he said it.
When his words ran out, all that he was attempting to keep hidden would be revealed.
Sure enough, as soon as Elena's kiss broke through his panic, ugly, choked sobs burst from him, reducing her brother to a scared, lost little boy who needed his eldest sister to lead him back to safety.
Elena was gentleness itself as she took Martin into her embrace, wrapping her arms tightly around him and running a hand comfortingly up and down his back as she cooed, “Shhh, Martin. It's all right, love. Whatever it is, it's all right.”
She had him now.

There was nothing in the world that the boy could have welcomed more than he did his sister's tight embrace; he fell into her, with nothing but her there to catch him and soothe his worries, letting all of himself out into the nape of her neck. Yet, though the familiar touch appeared to mend much of his inner turmoil and anxiety, every moment he spent within the soft warmth of his sister only encouraged the steady stream of tears to grow even stronger.
He had no way of knowing for how long he had been in that state and even when all his tears had been spent, young Martin still could not find it within his courage to let go of her - just not yet, not while she was still keeping him warm. His cheeks that a moment before still had born the hot mark of his emotion gradually cooled down, and a peculiar sense of serenity washed over the boy, as he looked up into his sister's eyes.
"It is.", he whispered, "I'm gay"
