Elena is not a person who can easily "feel" what is right. She knows what is right because her family taught her what is right, but she cannot intuitively look at a situation and feel what is the right thing to do.

However, she is a person to whom morality is very important, and she feels the need to affirm to herself that she is a "good" person, even though this idea of what a "good" person is has been entirely artificially constructed. This is why she is a doctor. She has to make moral decisions all the time – she is tested every minute of every day, and she must always do the right thing. It would be setting herself up for failure, but she legitimately does enjoy her job, and thus far has managed well.

Side note – I must determine how Elena would deal with a situation in which she inadvertently but undeniably fucked up, and she must deal with the consequences.
