Gus was never startled by the sudden appearance of Data.
He was not the sort that started easily…or at all really.

they were doing different parts of the same project at opposite ends
of the house. I suggest you keep them occupied and apart.”

Data hesitated for a moment, unsure exactly of how to
proceed.
“But... I have been instructed to work together with the
Miss Bones-Prewetts. If I am unable to convince them to
work together, I will have failed in my charge. Please,
are you sure there is no other way?”

Gus smiled at Data's insistence.
"In my experience they tend to go out of their
way to disagree. Perhaps if the projects you gave
them were time sensitive. Phoebe is highly
competitive. If she is challenged she performs
better. They might get along better if her
energy is more on the task and less on setting
Hermia on fire."

they would have learned to cooperate more effectively – did your
parents not emphasize the importance of teamwork? One would
think that, as the children of scientists, one would be able to
motivate them to cooperate without having to resort to playing
them off of each other.”

“If it is true that your sisters' relationship is as contentious
as you have described, I do not believe that speaking to them
about cooperating would prove to be particularly effective.
It could potentially drive them further apart, if they are so
intent upon disagreeing.”

your sister Phoebe is of a competitive nature – how do you
suggest using that to our advantage?”

understand. Is it ego that drives her behavior, or some
other factor?”
“While I conceivably could fabricate a story for Phoebe
about Hermia out-performing her, I am concerned that such
an act would serve only to deepen the rift between them.
Would you be willing to speak to Phoebe? I believe that
you would be far more impactful than I.”
