job interview || bellatrix & mulciber
–– “I've heard stories about you,
Mr Mulciber – impressive stories, to be sure,
but then, one hardly knows
whether to trust an Avery not to exaggerate.”
–– “Tell me, my dear:
what do you have to offer
beyond your father’s name?”

Put them to the test at your leisure”

–– “Confidence can be an incredible strength –
if it is deserved.
Take our dear friend M a l c o l m, for instance –
even his own father admits that the boy would last all
of thirty seconds in a fair fight.”
–– “You will have the chance to prove yourself to me
sooner than you expected.
I leave for Ashford this evening on business.
I would very much like for you
to accompany me.”

There was something
at the tip of his tongue. Maybe the observation
that he had never seen Malcolm fight fair in his life, but he kept it there.

He knew better than to provoke her.
“Very well”

–– “You will be at the manor by half twelve,
or you will find me gone. Please tell your father
that I will no longer require his services tonight.”
She pushed herself from her seat, crossing the
parlour to reach for a crystal decanter perched
atop an ornate cabinet. A drink. She wasn’t sure
what it was about dealing with her younger com-
rades that drove her to drink, but she was hardly
the type to deny herself the indulgence.
–– “Oh, and Avarius - ”
She turned to look over her shoulder,
a small smile on her lips.
–– “Do not bring your cane.
Tonight is not a the time to indulge your weaknesses.
If you are unable to keep pace, we shall have to reconsider
whether or not you are capable of this sort of work.”
She pulled the stopper out,
pleasing herself with the noise,
and turned again to smile sweetly at her guest.
–– “Brandy?”

Ah, so this was how it was going to be. Lestrange’s bitch apparently
thought she was being clever, now. The woman was set out to
mock him, after all.

Blinded by ignorance and prejudice, she set out to humiliate him by exposing his weakness - as if it was not there already, obvious for everyone and anyone to see, as if he was not worth two of her, even without the support of his cane.
He gave her an ugly grin.
“Fine”
He would simply have to drink a potion for numbing the pain before he came to her request, as that would even out the effects of his usual support. It would hardly make a difference.
”No”, he said, “Firewhiskey, if you have some”
The woman had set herself up for a surprise.

Re: job interview || bellatrix & mulciber
The young Mulciber really was a remarkably unattractive man.
Though his face had the proud cast of his family,
the unnatural pallour made him look strange, alien,
and the way his smile twisted his features made them appear
practically grotesque, a caricature of what a human grin was meant to be.
Back once again facing her guest, Bellatrix smirked. At least the
mask would represent a significant improvement on that front.
Still, she couldn’t help but admire his composure.
She had been testing him, attempting to elicit some sort of response,
and he had not given in, had not so much as complained.
His stoicism could prove useful,
though she still remained unconvinced that his physical frailty
would not get in the way of his work for their organisation.
–– “I don’t typically offer firewhiskey to my guests, but you’re in luck.”
Bellatrix reached down to open the cabinet and pulled from it
a half-empty bottle of amber liquid.
–– “My husband is rather fond of it –
I promise, I’ll not tell him you were the one to drink it if you don’t.”

Re: job interview || bellatrix & mulciber
His expectations had gravely shifted now, and it had only taken a single sentence from the woman for him to understand what their interaction was truly about. Only a fool would have missed the cue.
Initially, he had thought that the whole endeavor would be simply about testing his skill in magic, and his loyalty to the cause - nothing more than a formality to get done before his joining.
He had been naive to think like this. He should have known, should have expected that his condition would make a difference in how he was treated, as it always had. Nobody was going to make his life any easier or him.
So, instead, this woman was going to do anything in her power to make sure that he would fail his initiation. She was going to throw every obstacle at him that she could think of, to make it harder for him. And above all, she was going to exploit his illness in every possible way, so she could expose him for the useless cripple she.
He could not let his anger show. If she wanted a weakling to spit at, she was going to have to look elsewhere.
“Of course”, he said.

Re: job interview || bellatrix & mulciber
Perhaps Bellatrix should feel bad about
just how much she was enjoying this.
She was, after all, among friends.
His lack of reaction was as telling
as if he’d completely lost his temper and yelled at her.
That he didn’t respond even slightly to any of her veiled insults,
insults she knew he was bright enough to understand,
told her quite clearly that her barbs had hit their mark.
Whether he brushed aside her jibes because
he had learned to be thick-skinned
or because he believed himself to be above them
remained to be seen.
As she filled the glasses,
enjoying the sharp bite of the alcohol as she inhaled,
she wondered just how many insinuations against him
she could slip into their conversation
before he simply c r a c k e d.
Drinks poured, Bellatrix crossed the room again
and settled back into her seat.
Once situated, she extended
her guest’s glass towards him, smiling warmly.
–– “Drink up, my dear. You need your strength.”

Re: job interview || bellatrix & mulciber
Despite her provocation, he refused to give any sort of reaction; his face was set in stone, his movement was as smooth as ever, his voice did not falter - it was only his gaze that somehow seemed more intense, following her every move, and yet, even his eyes showed no sign of any outward aggression.
He did, however, make the point to stand up to take the glass from her.
He kept on standing even as he took the first sip from the whiskey. It was only after he had already felt the familiar, tingling liquid burn down his throat, only after he had placed the glass back on the table that he allowed himself to sink into the chair again.
He would not take anything from her while sitting down.
“Thank you”, he said, and when he smiled at her this time, he made sure to show her his teeth.

Re: job interview || bellatrix & mulciber
Bellatrix watched impassively as Mulciber drank, revealing nothing of what she was thinking or feeling. If there was a benefit to having grown up as a pureblood heiress, it was that she had learned to keep her true thoughts and emotions hidden. If there was a benefit to having worked alongside the Dark Lord for as long as she had, it was that she had learned to ensure that they stayed that way.
It was not until the young man had taken his seat again that Bellatrix finally spoke. “Very impressive, Mr Mulciber,” she said. “I hadn't expected you to handle your firewhiskey so well.”
She wasn't talking about the firewhiskey. But then, she was sure that he knew that.

Re: job interview || bellatrix & mulciber
Any wayward emotion that threatened to come over him right then, the young man quickly turned into aloof amusement, with nothing more than another small sip from his glass. He raised his brows at her, and regarded the woman for a moment, his head tilted in a way that was almost leering, a huge grin spread over his face.
"What? Disappointed? Missing out on the opportunity to catch me in your big strong arms had I went swooning?", he said, unable to stop himself from turning her slight jab into an opportunity to make her uncomfortable. Still, he recognized that he wasn't really in the position to give her the full force of his schtick, and so he quickly added another chuckle, and shook his head.
"Joking, joking", he reassured her, "You'd be the surprised the things I can handle, Mrs. Lestrange"
