It wasn’t often that Bellatrix was
caught speechless, but in the
wake of the child’s attack she
was struck dumb, gaping at him
for a long moment.
And then she began
to laugh.
It was not a good-humoured
laugh. There was no warmth
in her voice, no joy, and her
eyes remained dead and
unfeeling even as her
shoulders shook with mirth
and her smile brightened
alarmingly.
–– “I like you, little one,”
she said, still chuckling,
as she reached forwards
to muss his hair.
–– “I think I will have to
keep you around.”

As the young boy stepped back from his
impulsiveness, he slowly started to regret
his decision a little, if only because the
aftertaste her hand had left in his mouth
was absolutely terrible. Seriously, what

Bellatrix smiled in amusement, shaking her head at

get to pass the rest of the evening in my company, and
I’m terribly interesting. Far better company than the rest

The boy crossed his arms, and eyes her suspiciously, although for only a moment. He wasn’t sure if he lied the strange witch - she wasn’t much like his mother, and most definitely not like Winky, so he couldn’t really be sure.
Still, she wasn’t like the other adults there, either, that was true, admittedly. She didn’t ask him about his father, for once, or about his ‘readings’, and she wasn’t at all annoying about talking to him.
He hesitated for another moment.
”Okay”, he wrinkled his nose, “As long as you promise not to pat me on the head”

Bellatrix returned his suspicious glare with a cool smile, only narrowly avoiding the temptation to burst out laughing. There was something far too amusing about just how adult the child seemed to think that he was.
“I shall do my best to remember,” she said, smiling more warmly. “And I give you full permission to thoroughly chastise me if I forget. Just because I am a grown-up doesn’t mean you should have to tolerate me doing things that you don’t like.”

”Really? I didn’t know that”, he said, unconsciously leaning closer to her. Had the other adults lied to him when they that not wanting to hug people was rude and disrespectful, or that he should be forced in their presence if he’d rather stay and eat chocolate because they wanted to pat him? He needed to think more about it.
”Everyone else just keeps petting me and telling me I’m cute when I get mad about it”, he made a face, “But then I’m not cute. I’m mad”
