“Ah yes, Miss Lestrange.”
“I had very nearly forgotten you.”
He wished that were true.
He also wished he was not here at all.
But Moody and Fabian both had been insistent that
August did not avoid this encounter.
Something about being on the same team now.

even if they were on the same s i d e.

Re: playing nice || augustus & bellatrix
“It’s Mrs Lestrange, though please –– you may call me Bellatrix.
I prefer not to be addressed by my married name.”
Bellatrix had not been pleased when she had been told that she
had been assigned to welcome Rookwood into the Order. Fabian
Prewett was a fool, a blind fool who had somehow tricked their
superiors into allowing this man into their ranks. But Bellatrix knew
better than to accept him with closed eyes and open arms. She knew
Augustus Rookwood. She knew that he was not a man to be trusted.
“It has been a long time since Hogwarts,” she said softly, the
corner of her mouth turning up in a smile that did not entirely reach
her eyes. “Please, tell me what you have made of your life since then.”

“How about we drop the act?
No one is around.
We should talk as we
always have.”

Augustus knew she did not trust him. That was just as well,
since he did not trust her either. He was doing this mostly
for Fabian and Amelia. Joining the Order was for them
and this conversation was for them. Bellatrix, however,
knew him in a way they did not. She knew how easy
it would have been for him to join the Death
Eaters. That made her a dangerous
enemy in the midst of allies.

“You’ve never liked me and you’re not about to start now.
The same goes for me.
So, whatever it is you plan on
subtly insinuating get it out in the open.
I am not going to play games with you, Bellatrix.”

Or perhaps that was a lie. After all, Augustus was always playing games.

Re: playing nice || augustus & bellatrix
Bellatrix’s smile did not so much as falter at the
man’s words. That was how he wanted this little
interaction to go, then. So be it. She would not break.
She would not show the slightest sign of weakness.
There was nothing to show, after all. Rookwood’s
feelings towards her were entirely personal. Besides
the curse of having been born a Black and forced into
a marriage with a Lestrange, both circumstances
outside of her control, she had a clean record.
Rookwood, though – he had dark secrets lurking in
his past. Things beyond imagining. Let him dredge up
dirty laundry, then; he would only come to regret it.
“My feelings towards you are irrelevant, Mr
Rookwood,” she said, reaching down to pick up her
glass of wine. She toyed with the stem for a moment
before taking a dainty sip and setting it back down.
“But I will admit, you have given me little reason to
believe that you truly have left your past behind. Given
what I know of you, Augustus, are you truly surprised
that I am suspicious of your motivations?”

“I'm more surprised that you're here in the first place.
You’ve never shown any signs of rebelling from the
family standards. Not like your brother.”

“No, you not trusting me was expected.
You always had your nose too high in the
air to see what was in front of you. Of course,
you would have liked me far more as I was raised to be.”
Rookwood picked up his wine glass. As if by some magic in the crystal
he suddenly changed. The Augustus now was more postured and had
a distinct air of grace. Even his accent changed to acknowledge the
pristine manner in which the purebloods ought to talk.
”Is this more fitting for someone of my status?
Or perhaps I need to add more prejudice to my image?
I could go into the city and turn my nose up at the muggle population.
That is what you do, correct?”

Re: playing nice || augustus & bellatrix
At first, all Bellatrix did was smile. Even as she raised her glass for another dainty sip, the corners of her mouth remained stubbornly quirked up. But as amused as the expression made her appear, her eyes were cold, calculating, and completely untouched by her mirth.
After a long and heavy silence, during which her gaze never left Rookwood’s face, Bellatrix finally spoke. “I am a pureblood, Mr Rookwood, and I was raised to follow certain standards of decorum. I will not apologise for these facts. It is simply the reality of who and what I am.”
She raised her chin slightly, staring haughtily down at the man opposite. “Do not mistake my public diffidence for complacency, or my place in pureblood society as acceptance of its values. I play my part and I play it well, enabling me to aid the Order in ways that no one else can. As admirable as my dear cousin’s little rebellion was – ” Here she curled her lip. “ – cut off from our family as he is, there is little of use that he can offer besides himself. I am capable of more.”
