Avery should have caught on to his little game right there and then - the only time he ever used such words of endearment, or - Merlin forbid, referred to himself as ‘sentimental’ was, when he was just about to taunt somebody.

Malcolm beamed back at his friend. He couldn't help it; he was always overwhelmingly pleased when Mulciber complimented him. Sure, Malcolm was fully aware of his own greatness, but it was ever so nice to get outside confirmation from someone he respected so much.
“You're a damned decent chap, Mulce,” Malcolm said fondly, shaking his head as he reached for the bag. “You're really too kind. All right, let's take a look at this, shall we?”

At these words, Mulciber allowed himself a hearty laugh, and shook his head. "You almost make it sound as though your new asset's turned me soft, Merlin forbid", he said with a wide grin, and casually leaned against his cane.
