Rugged // Hermia & Séverine

It was a dark day, once more, when it took her to the Bleeding Leech.
Knockturn Alley was, as always, filled with dirt and scum. No honest soul would dare step foot in here, unless it was to clean it all out, but that was an effort as wasted as putting a Muggle on a broom. Just as there would always be rats underneath the city, spreading their filth, fighting eachother for scraps, here would always be addicts, beggars, criminals, and other scum, on the edges of society.
Hermia fit right in.
Today, she needed to shut off her mind, there was no point in trying to dwell on what she was, or what she was doing. And so, she found herself, again, opening the door to the Bleeding Leech, a place that might not even deserve to be called a pub.
She didn't care, though. She just wanted to get wasted.
"Acromantulum. Make it quick"

The Bleeding Leech was not the sort of venue that one simply stumbled into – if the unpromising exterior weren’t enough to drive the casual pub-goer away, everything on the inside, from the dilapidated interior that even the thick clouds of smoke billowing around could not entirely hide, to the harsh reek of the exotic and deadly ingredients that the clientele had very obviously been consuming, was enough to send anyone looking for a pint of something potable running home with a resolution never to drink again.
People came here to forget – to disappear into the anonymity of the dim lighting and potent drinks. Most people did, at least – Sévérine personally had made the pub (as loosely as the establishment met that description) her regular watering hole out mostly out of frugality. She had rapidly discovered that she could trade some of the difficult-to-obtain ingredients she’d stolen from work for unlimited drinks.
Besides, she met the most fascinating people here.
It had been a slow night, so far, with most people slumped blissfully in their seats, riding out the effects of the Leech’s latest drink – a drink that Sévérine had personally designed, and that nobody in their right mind should willingly allow into their body. But they didn’t need to know that – let them enjoy themselves before the heavy neurological damage set in.
The entrance of the girl, therefore, turned Sévérine’s head some. She was painfully out of place – unlike the rest of them stranded on this island of lost toys, she seemed like the kind of person who might conceivably have some sort of future waiting for her, who had a family, or at least friends, who cared about her well-being. All in all, not the sort of person one expected to find in a pub that specialized in drinks spiked with actual poison.
Bored as she was, she decided to engage the stranger. Best case scenario, she might get an interesting conversation out of the girl, and worst, she’d at least get to make someone deeply uncomfortable. Either way, a win-win.
“Impressive order for a first-timer,” she drawled, flashing her teeth in a casual but distinctly unfriendly smile. “Let’s see you keep it down.”

Hermia actually did not turn toward whoever had spoken to her right away. That was because she had to strain every muscle on her face, in order to restrain the chuckle that was threatening to erupt from her. She feared that, once it was out, she would not stop laughing. Only after she was reasonably sure she was not going to start shrieking with laughter the second she set eyes on the girl, did she bother to turn around.
She didn't say a word. She didn't need to. Her look conveyed everything she didn't bother to say aloud.
The woman was not unlike most of the people who frequented the place, dirty, poor, and with an obnoxious smirk on her face. Bothering people she didn't know. Who weren't even drunk yet.
Rude.
And for Merlin's sake where was here drink? Didn't she say to make it quick?

Sévérine returned the girl’s hostile expression with a sly grin. “Yes, feel free to keep making that face. As soon as the acromantula venom starts kicking in, you won’t have much say in what your face does, and you should enjoy your last moments of control.”
She snapped her fingers, drawing the attention of the barman. “An Acromantulum for the lady. And none of that rubbish Dawson brought in last week – I’m sure she can handle the new batch.”
The barman looked between the women, seemingly confused as to who wanted the drink. Before the stranger had a chance to make a move for the glass, Sévérine had picked it up, throwing back a small swig.
“Ah, perfect,” she said, smacking her lips in an infuriating display of satisfaction. “I don’t understand why you bother using any other suppliers when they’re selling you ingredients about as potent as piss.”
Turning back to the stranger, she proffered the drink. “Here you are, then. It’s freshly brewed – I dropped off the venom last week – and it’s about strong enough to knock out a Hippogriff. But go on, enjoy your drink. It’s darlings like you who keep me in business. I can’t say it particularly matters to me if you do get sick – I get paid either way.”

Right. Okay. It was obvious what was going on, and by Merlin - Hermia could not have been less in the mood for this charade.
So, this girl thought she was in over her head? Whatever, she didn't care, let her believe what she wanted. As if she didn't know what she was ordering, as if she was too stupid to understand how the venom worked, as if she didn't have the exact same drink here last week.
But, whatever. If she got a kick out of giving Hermia a free drink she wasn't going to complain.
"You look like more of a lightweight than me", she said, before downing the drink before her, in one go.
So, this girl thought she was in over her head? Whatever, she didn't care, let her believe what she wanted. As if she didn't know what she was ordering, as if she was too stupid to understand how the venom worked, as if she didn't have the exact same drink here last week.

She snapped her fingers again. “Two more glasses ofAcromantulum, if you don’t mind.”
The drinks were rapidly poured and placed on the bar, though the idiot barman had placed one before the stranger, assuming that she was still feeling generous.
Sévérine was not feeling generous. Would she rise to the woman’s challenge? Absolutely. Would she allow the challenger to take advantage of her unlimited bar tab? Absolutely not. After all, her Acromantulum-induced hangover the next day would be all the sweeter with a twist of financial regret to round out the excruciating headache, vertigo, and gastric distress.
“Sorry, dear,” she said, picking up both of her drinks. “These are mine.”
She threw back one, set it back on the bar, and took the other glass in hand, sipping it at a more leisurely pace. True, this wasn’t exactly the sort of drink meant to be sipped – it tasted like fermented flobberworm mucus and burned like dragon fire – but after years of working with just about every noxious chemical known to wizardkind, she was all but immune to revolting tastes, smells, and sensations. She could keep this up for at least a few swallows.
“Feel free to join me – you look like you think you could use at least a few more drinks.”

Fuck.
She had to bite her lip in order to stop the curse from escaping her, as she just stared at the woman beside her. This time, however, the sight had a completely different effect on her. The way that she had so effortlessly fit into her environment, how eagerly she had taken up a challenge she had only barely offered, the cheeky malice in her tone every time the woman had addressed her...
It was all incredibly hot.
For a moment Hermia considered that the girl might have actually laced the drink with some sort of aphrodisiac, but as soon as that thought crossed her mind, she realized that she truly did not care if that was the case. It would be a good excuse to herself, later, when her brain would remind her that this had been a woman - another woman! But - No, she needed to shut off her mind.
"Sure, I'll join you, but drinks aren't the only thing I could use right now"
"Another Acromantulum for me please... and also a Nightshade-Brandy, also for me."
